What is the Intercultural Development Inventory?

The IDI (Intercultural Development Inventory) is a widely used tool that assesses intercultural competence - the ability to shift cultural perspective and appropriately adapt behavior to cultural differences and commonalities.

It is a theory-based (not opinion-based) inventory which meets standard scientific criteria for a valid and reliable psychometric instrument, which provides a baseline and a structure for understanding how we think about cultural differences and similarities. The 50-question assessment can be completed online. A coaching session will follow the online assessment to debrief your results in a one-on-one setting. The coaching session allows a safe space to talk through any questions, concerns or stressors involving cross-cultural life and will set you on a trajectory to go deeper in understanding others and being understood.

I appreciated the practical steps and suggestions I gained from the coaching sessions, which I wouldn’t have thought of on my own. It really helped me grow in understanding and move forward in this process of cultural adaptation. … Understanding the scale has helped me feel more effective in cross-cultural life and relationship-building.
